Rent a car for beautiful Chania, and visit the unique Sougia! Sougia is located about 70 km from the center of Chania, and is washed by the Libyan Sea. Sougia is a beautiful village built alongside the huge beach, while the two main roads available have only a few cars.
The beauty of Sougia lies in its simplicity, with a few bars, cafes and restaurants, but offering everything that you desire to eat and drink. Evenings with traditional Cretan music accompanied by Cretan lyra are not missing, while the long beach is divided into two parts, where at the left half you will encounter many nudists. On the beach, because of the minimum accommodation compared to the people that every summer visit the village, you will see many free campers.
For hiking lovers, Sougia is built at the exit of the gorge of Agia Irini, a lush canyon ideal for walking, while the second and milder, Lissos gorge, starts above the harbor of Sougia. By walking about two hours, you will reach the ancient Lissos, a most beautiful uninhabited area which had blossomed for trade but also the Asklepieion that the mosaic still can be clearly seen. The nature and tranquility will relax you and the small beach is ideal for diving! From ancient Lissos, you can return to Sougia by boat that passes regularly.
Before starting your trip to Sougia, note that there is no gas station, pharmacy or bank! From the small port of Sougia, pass really often boats to Gavdos. Remember that the Libyan Sea is much colder than the Mediterranean sea!
