Rethymnon is built in the same place that the ancient Rithymna was built, giving rich archaeological material that reveals a remarkable ancient city with a developed trade. During the Venetian rule, which lasted until 1669, they built many of the cultural and architectural relics of the city, such as the Castle Forteza, the beautiful old town with houses from the Venetian period and flourished during this period arts and literature. The conquest of the city by the Turks in 1669 led the city into decline and abandonment, while after the liberation began the development of the city. To the Holy Monastery of Arkadi, one of the most important of Crete, 23 km away from the center of Rethymnon, on the slope of Mount Idi, built since the 5th century. The monastery has a long history, playing an important role in the struggles of Crete for the liberations from the Ottomans. The monastery has been declared by UNESCO European Freedom Monument.
To the old town of Rethymno, a combination of Venetian architecture and influences of the Ottoman, with narrow streets, the Venetian harbor and the arched facades of the Venetian Loggia. On a walk in the old city, you will arrive at the beautiful castle Fortezza, one of the largest Venetian castles built.
To the famous Preveli Monastery, 40 km away from Rethymnon, the long history and contribution to the liberation struggle, and of course the religious icons of inestimable value hosted. Of course the landscape around the monastery Preveli is not only unique, but has an almost tropical beach of incredible beauty.
To the many caves of Rethymno, with most important the Ideon Andron, the cave where, according to mythology, hid the newborn Zeus and was raised from Amalthea.
Finally, with a rental car you will explore all the beautiful beaches of Rethymno, on the north and south! Panormos and the village will delight you, Platanes, Plakias and Bali are some of the most remarkable beaches, but if you like to relax, pick the farthest route for the deserted beach Triopetra!
